Should you be using Retinol?

Retinol or rather retinoids have been a buzz word within the beauty/anti-aging industry for many years now. However, most of our patients are still completely unaware of the benefits or if they should be using this ‘wonder’ potion and are confused as to how it can be beneficial for their skin. Many of whom invest heavily on injectables such a Botox and Dermal Fillers but fail to look after their skin health. Good skin care is absolutely the foundation to reducing the signs of ageing and should be a priority before embarking on injectable treatments.

Retinoids is the name for a group of potent vitamin A derivatives. Each varies in potency and delivery into the skin.

Retinol helps with cellular turnover. Helping to increase collagen production, plumps skin to help soften fine lines and wrinkles, can help repair and support the skins structural defences especially with acne breakouts.

Due to the potency of retinol many patients ditch the product before they see results. Side effects such as increased sensitivity, redness, flaky skin and even burns can put even the most vomited skin care enthusiast off of using. However, when used correctly, building tolerance slowly these side effects can be kept to a minimum.

It’s advisable to use the lowest strength retinol and start just once or twice weekly in the evening. Investing in a good calming moisturiser also to help mitigate post retinol dryness.

The retinol golden rule is that SPF is a must as retinol can make skin more sensitive and more photosensitive especially in the summer months.

We absolutely love retinol, as it addresses so many skin concerns at once, from dullness, texture, acne, lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores and pigmentation. It helps to smooth skin, increase elasticity and firmness. We certainly wouldn’t be without it!
